- ABERRANT MIGRATION OF THE LARVA OF CUTEREBRA SP. MAY OCCUR FROM THE NOSTRIL, THROUGH THE CRIBRIFOM PLATE, INTO THE CRANIUM. MIGRATION RESULTS IN LESIONS PRIMARILY IN THE REGION OF DISTRIBUTION OF THE MIDDLE CEREBRAL ARTERY, EITHER UNILATERALLY OR RARELY BILATERALLY, DURING THE LATE SUMMER OR EARLY FALL MONTHS. THE ACTUAL CAUSE HAS NOT BEEN PROVEN, ALTHOUGH TOXIC EFFECTS OF THE PARASITE RESULTING IN VASCULAR OCCLUSION ARE STRONGLY SUSPECTED. EXTENSIVE NECROSIS OF THE HIPPOCAMPUS , CEREBRAL GREY AND WHITE MATTER, AND THE BRAIN STEM IN THIS AREA IS OFTEN SEEN (CEREBRAL ISCHEMIC ENCEPHALOPATHY_. IN CHRONIC LESIONS, THERE IS MARKED ATROPHY OF THE AFFECTED AREAS OF THE BRAIN. THIS PARTICULAR IMAGE DEMONSTRATES THE PRESENTCE OF A DEGNERATING ARTHROPOD.

- Aberrant migration of the larva of Cuterebra sp. may occur from the nostril, through the cribrifom plate, into the cranium. Migration results in lesions primarily in the region of distribution of the middle cerebral artery, either unilaterally or rarely bilaterally, during the late summer or early fall months. The actual cause has not been proven, although toxic effects of the parasite resulting in vascular occlusion are strongly suspected. Extensive necrosis of the hippocampus , cerebral grey and white matter, and the brain stem in this area is often seen (cerebral ischemic encephalopathy_. In chronic lesions, there is marked atrophy of the affected areas of the brain. This particular image demonstrates unilateral atrophy and collapse of the cerebral hemisphere, a chronic lesion of cerebral ischemic encephalopathy in the cat.
